My plans for next year and beyond
What "early retirement" means to me, including where I will live and what I will do
Something important has changed in me in the last few weeks: I went from feeling quite comfortable in my expat post-nomad existence here in Barcelona to feeling slightly unsettled that my time here is likely coming to an end.
Attentive readers of my last post might have noticed that I don’t expect to be in Barcelona come June. That’s because my son is going back to the U.S. for the Summer, and is likely to stay there for school next year. Thus, my reason for being in Barcelona in the first place is coming to end (though not my reason for being in Spain).
This has got me thinking about my near- and long-term living situation, but it’s also got me feeling a bit nostalgic about this city. It’s a similar feeling as when you’re nearing the end of an amazing vacation. Except here I’m nearing the end of what has been a life-defining time in many ways.
How will I take advantage of everything this city has to offer before I leave? What must I still do here that I won’t be able to do elsewhere? Where do I plan to live next year, and how do my plans for “early retirement” fit into all of this?
Read on.
